Fireworks & Summer Fun in Otsego, Schoharie & Chenango
Where to catch the biggest booms, the best fairs, and those slow country evenings that make you glad you moved out here — county by county.
There's a certain kind of summer night you only really get out here. The heat lets go around eight, the fireflies come up out of the hayfields, and somewhere over the next ridge a firework show is getting started. When we moved to this part of Upstate New York, the Fourth of July was the first time it truly clicked — this wasn't a place we were visiting anymore. It was home.
So whether you're already a neighbor or you're picturing what life could look like out here, here's our honest guide to the best fireworks, fairs, and small-town summer fun across three of our counties — Otsego, Schoharie, and Chenango. Grab a lawn chair. Let's plan the season.
Two Nights of Fireworks Over the Lake
Otsego is spoiled when it comes to the Fourth. If you're anywhere near Cooperstown, the show over Otsego Lake at Lakefront Park is the one everyone talks about — the Community Concert Band plays "Stars & Stripes Forever" as the sun drops behind the hills, and then the sky lights up over the water at dusk. It's the kind of postcard moment that made a lot of us fall for this place.
Down in Oneonta, the Hometown 4th of July at Neahwa Park is a full day of it: a parade steps off on Main Street early afternoon, then live music, food, kids' activities, and a big fireworks finale after dark. And don't sleep on the Springfield parade at the north end of the lake — one of the oldest Independence Day parades in the country — followed by a concert and fireworks at Glimmerglass State Park.
Want to stretch the fun past the holiday? Catch an Oneonta Outlaws game under the lights at historic Damaschke Field, sip a glass while the sun sets over the valley at Pail Shop Vineyards in Fly Creek, or wander the Farmers' Museum and Fenimore in Cooperstown. This is the heart of Otsego, and there's always something on.
Main Street mornings before the fireworks — the parades here still feel like the ones you remember.
Sunshine, Lilies & a Week of Fair Lights
Schoharie saves its big fireworks for the Schoharie County Sunshine Fair, and honestly, we think that's the right call. Running August 11–16 at the Cobleskill Fairgrounds, it's everything a country fair should be — demolition derbies, tractor and truck pulls, harness racing, Clydesdales, a youth livestock auction, chainsaw sculpture, and yes, fireworks lighting up the fairgrounds. This year's grandstand headliner is country artist Joe Nichols.
Earlier in the summer, Middleburgh throws its beloved Lily Festival at the height of tiger lily season in July — a genuinely charming small-town day that captures exactly why people relocate here. And if you've never gone underground at Howe Caverns or explored the Iroquois Museum in Howes Cave, put both on the list.
Here's the honest note: Schoharie is quieter than Otsego on the Fourth itself, without a single marquee July fireworks show. But that's the trade — this is some of the most beautiful, affordable, tucked-away farmland in the region, and the fair week more than makes up for it. If your dream is land and elbow room with a fairgrounds glow on the horizon come August, this county rewards you.

Fireworks at the Fairgrounds, Blues in the Park
In Chenango, the Fourth belongs to Norwich. The Fireworks Over the Fairgrounds celebration at the Chenango County Fairgrounds is the go-to — gates open in the afternoon for food, music, vendors, and family fun, all building to a fireworks finale. It's affordable, unfussy, and exactly the kind of community night this county does so well.
But the thing we'd really tell a newcomer? Come for the Chenango Blues Festival Summer Series — free live music every Thursday evening in July and August at Norwich's East Park, with food vendors and a beer garden right by the stage. It leads up to the main Chenango Blues Festival (August 20–22), one of the best roots-music weekends anywhere Upstate.
And when the fireworks fade, Chenango keeps giving: the Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich is a rainy-day gem, the Chenango County Fair rolls in mid-August (Aug 12–16), and the beloved free Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival fills downtown Norwich's parks the weekend after Labor Day. This is a county that punches well above its size.

Otsego — the fireworks capital of the three: the lake at Cooperstown, Oneonta's Hometown 4th, and the Springfield/Glimmerglass show.
Schoharie — quieter on the Fourth, but the Sunshine Fair (Aug 11–16) brings a full week of fireworks and country fun, plus the Middleburgh Lily Festival.
Chenango — Fireworks Over the Fairgrounds in Norwich for the Fourth, then free Thursday blues in East Park all summer long.
Summer out here isn't about one big night — it's a whole season of parades, fairs, blanket-in-the-grass concerts, and fireworks over the water. Whichever county you land in, you're never far from a good one. And if watching these skies makes you start wondering what it'd be like to wake up here every day, well — that's usually how it starts. Your place out here is waiting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where's the best fireworks show of the three counties?
For sheer setting, it's hard to beat the display over Otsego Lake at Cooperstown's Lakefront Park. Oneonta's Hometown 4th at Neahwa Park is the biggest full-day celebration. Both are worth the drive.
Does Schoharie County have Fourth of July fireworks?
Schoharie tends to save its big fireworks for the Sunshine Fair in Cobleskill in mid-August rather than the Fourth itself. For a July 4th show, many locals head to neighboring Otsego. Always confirm current-year plans with organizers.
Are these events family-friendly and affordable?
Very much so. Most parades and park fireworks are free to watch, the Blues Fest Summer Series is free, and county fairs are budget-friendly with kids' pricing. It's one of the quiet joys of raising a family out here.
When should I arrive to get a good spot?
For lakeside or park shows, get there an hour or two before dusk with chairs and a blanket. Parking fills fast in Cooperstown and Oneonta on the Fourth — carpool if you can and plan a patient exit.
